If you are taking a physical product idea to a buyer, an investor or a trade show, a printed prototype in your hand does more in ten seconds than a render does in ten slides. Here is how to get one without a procurement process.
What a printed prototype is good for
Proving fit and ergonomics — does it sit in a hand, clip to that rail, fit that enclosure? This is where printing pays for itself, because you find the 2mm mistake before it becomes a tooling mistake.
Showing intent. A solid physical model reads as a real product to buyers and investors in a way a CAD screenshot does not.
Short-run bridge production. Printing the first 50 units while tooling is quoted keeps a launch moving.
Realistic timescales
A straightforward single part is often quoted the same working day and printed within a few days. Multi-part assemblies and finished, painted models take longer.
Build iteration into your plan. Most products need two or three printed rounds — first for fit, second for refinement, third for the version you show people.
Tolerances and expectations
Typical FDM accuracy is in the region of ±0.5mm depending on part geometry and material shrinkage; resin and well-tuned machines do better. Tell your maker which dimensions are critical rather than expecting every one to be exact.
Design in clearance for moving or mating parts, and expect threads, snap fits and press fits to need one test round to dial in.
What to send with your enquiry
A 3MF or STL file if you have one, or dimensioned sketches and reference photos if you do not. Add the intended material or the environment the part lives in, the quantity, the critical dimensions, and the date you need it by.
If the design is commercially sensitive, say so in the request and we will keep it to the assigned maker.

- Can you print a functional part, not just a visual model?
- Yes — PETG, nylon and carbon-filled filaments cover a lot of functional prototyping. Tell us the loads and temperatures involved.
- Can you scale up if the product sells?
- Printing covers low volumes and bridge runs well. Beyond a few thousand identical parts, moulding is usually the cheaper route and we will say so.
